Galleries
The galleries are organized according to geography rather than subject just to keep things simpler for me. I'm not searching for the essence of a place; I'm just photographing bits and pieces. These bits and pieces are my best photos up to now wherever they might have been taken and whatever their subject matter might be. While on vacation the summer of 2017, I visited Clifty Falls State Park in Indiana. The best photo I took that day was a faucet in the men's rest room. I've never taken a picture of a faucet before, but the lighting was good, the overall scene looked interesting to me, and the camera happened to take a good image of it. I enjoyed seeing Clifty Falls, but I didn't take any good photos of them. I take lots of photos of all sorts of people and things, and I try to be critical about the results of all that picture-taking since I'm not only learning how to take better photos but also recognizing when one photo works better than another. I'm a little embarrassed by some of my earlier photos, the ones I was so proud of and now am reluctant to acknowledge. Makes me wonder what I'll think in five years of the photos I'm taking now. Actually, it should make me feel pretty good. If I'm doing that much better in five years, I'll be happy!
I'm not a street photographer or a portrait photographer or a landscape photographer although I enjoy doing all of them. I like hunting for interesting situations and capturing them in rectangular images. I wander around Waikiki or Chinatown or Kailua Beach looking for things to photograph. I find cemeteries fascinating places as well as thrift stores and antique malls. For me the important thing is the hunt, and I spend several hours a day about three or four times a week tracking down images. I've learned a great deal from reading books and watching videos about how to become a better photographer, but I've found like so many others that getting out there and taking photographs over and over again has taught me the most.
This site is primarily educational although I would certainly be interested in selling images if anyone wants one. I plan on sharing my evolving ideas about photography through the blog along with reviews of books that I find especially good. I also plan on using the blog to present larger groups of photos that I take at particular places at one time. I don't anticipate sharing product reviews of cameras and lenses since I don't have enough money to purchase many of those things. I've never owned more than one point-and-shoot camera at a time so my main interest has been composition rather than technical issues.
My goal is to make books out of several of these collections when I feel they're ready. That doesn't mean I'm procrastinating; just that I need more shots before I'm ready to publish. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
