I was born in St. Louis, grew up in Cincinnati, and have lived in Chicago, Boston and now Honolulu for the past 27 years. I'm married and have two daughters, two sons-in-law, and two grandchildren. I took my first photos when I was 8 years old. My father handed me his Kodak when we were visiting Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan and told me to take photos of anything that interested me. I had a few shots for the whole day, maybe 12, so it forced me to think hard about every one since each was so precious. Was this the best angle? Was the light right? Did I want tourists like my parents in the photo? I remember standing at a 45 degree angle to the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop, centering the shop in my viewfinder, holding my breath, and pressing the button. My parents still have that photo along with some of the other square black and whites I took that day. I was enchanted by the historic buildings at the Village, but today I’m more interested in photographing the people visiting those buildings. People intrigue me and I love seeing them in all their splendorous variety.
Photography has become increasingly important to me since 2013 when I saw the Abelardo Morell exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. I'd never seen an exhibit dedicated to photography and it inspired me to explore Chicago with my camera. I've been following my camera's lead ever since. Most of the photographs in my galleries were taken with a Canon S95, a point-and-shoot, as well as my Samsung smart phone. In September of 2018 I bought a slightly used Fujifilm X100S and a Canon S120. I usually take both cameras when I'm shooting. Sometimes I use both for the same scene since they see things differently, and I also like the zoom on the S120.
I hope you'll find some interesting things in the galleries. There are several ways I could have organized the photos but I decided to present them geographically rather than dividing them up in some other way. Most of the photos were taken in Hawaii, but many of them were taken during family trips to places like Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky. Looking back at these images, it reminds me of special moments I shared with family and friends and strangers who were about to ask why I was taking their picture but couldn't because I'd already walked away.
